If you want to know how passion and dedication look like when put together, listen to this man’s story.
Dr. Lincoln Parkes may now be a pensioner and a retiree, but this doesn’t stop him from doing the work he’s loved to do for over 60 years. At age 92, he works relentlessly to give hundreds of animals with disabilities a second chance in life by building specialized wheelchairs called K-9 carts
Dr. Parkes lives in Chesapeake Bay Town in Oxford, Maryland, where he built himself a workshop, two blocks away from his home. He discovered his lifelong dream after he met a man who was a medicine student at John Hopkins University.
He had a dog whose hind leg became paralyzed because of a car accident. So Dr. Parkes decided to use his orthopedic surgery expertise to create his first K-9 cart for the dog.
The dog’s owner asked him to come and see his dog with his new cart. Dr. Parkes decided to try it out in the field. What he saw next would change his career forever.
They attached the cart to the dog. As the owner threw a frisbee, the dog took off after it.
The frisbee, according to Dr. Parkes, was at least ten feet up in the air. The excited dog leaped with the cart still attached, caught the toy in its mouth, and made a graceful landing on the grass.
The cart was still intact and unbroken. After recounting that day, a teary-eyed Dr. Parkes said that this successful attempt became his source of inspiration.
In the early 1960s, Dr. Parkes decided to continue helping animals in need by building more K-9 carts. It may take days to complete a single unit, but he doesn’t mind because it brings him immense joy whenever he sees the animals he’s helped.
If you ask Dr. Parkes if he intends to retire anytime soon, he will probably tell you that the only retirement he knows is when he goes to bed at midnight. A witty answer, but technically, he is correct!
While dogs are Dr. Parkes’s regular clients, he also helped other animals walk, such as cats and even chickens! In an interview, he said it is essential that he gets the perfect measurements so it fits perfectly.
Every animal lover would agree that Dr. Parkes is a person of dedication, an animal lover with a good heart. We hope that more people like Dr. Parkes will find their calling in improving the welfare of animals.
We also look forward to seeing Dr. Parkes’s plans come to fruition. With that, we also hope that he continues to live in joy and good health!
