When a lioness named Sirona gave birth to two cubs in a Russian wildlife park, the park’s staff had to take the cubs into their care. The lioness was not very keen on looking after the cubs, and as a result, the babies became dehydrated and emaciated.
The staff told reporters that Sironawas a first-time mom and was an extremely introverted and reserved animal — and it caused her babies to suffer. When the lioness gave birth to the cubs, everything looked fine, but soon the staff realized that the lioness was disinterested in her babies.
The staff said that the behavior of the mother animal was completely unnatural. The lioness had also resorted to biting one of her cubs, and the wound was visible on the cub’s body. The staff even made a video of the lioness biting her cub.
The little animals were no longer safe with Sirona, so the staff decided to arrange a foster mom for the cubs. Fortunately, a sweet German Shepherd named Sandra was there at the park to help the cubs. Sandra was not always a fan of felines, but she straightaway took to the cubs much to the staff’s surprise.
The pooch started taking care of the lion babies as if they were her own. Sandra had her own puppy as well, who was smaller than the cubs and needed to be fed, but she had enough milk to feed both the puppy and the cubs.
The staff elaborated that the canine milk was completely safe for the cubs, and it had all the nutrients to aid in the proper nourishment of the cubs.
The director of the park, Viktor Agafonov, is quite proud of the canine because she is taking excellent care of the African lion cubs. The German Shepherd now gets special treatment at the park — including a lot of petting and plenty of treats.
